Did you chose: edit -> Find and replace -> more options -> regular expressions -> find $? That _is_ the way to find what you call "the code of return", so you must have misunderstood, or left something out. If you just do edit -> find and replace -> find $, which is what I suspect that you did, it will indeed not work.
