I have personally only encountered a similar problem once before when I attempted to run OpenOffice on an older Celeron machine I was fixing up for a friend. I figured lack of memory was the problem, so removed OpenOffice.org and installed a less memory-intensive free Word Processor.
Perhaps others on this forum can help you. Please indicate the version of OpenOffice.org you are running, details about your machine, including memory available, operating system (Windows?, Macintosh?, Linux?) and version (XP?, Tiger?, Ubuntu?).
