To be frank there is not much information in the archives on this list
regarding Base, there is quite a bit in the web forums however...a quick
search will find a number of solutions - which one is best for you
particular use?

These are all listed on the first page when doing a search for
"calculated field" in the Base forums, and as mentioned in the last
paragraph - as opposed to this mailing list the forums do support
attaching files, so you can get concrete examples.
OOoforum.org has even more entries and still more can be found in users
mailing list archives under the dba project page.
