Hello to Anybody Out There:
I suppose I am less knowledgable than I previously thought. However, after downloading openoffice I am unable to get it fuctionable. In fact, I cannot seem to get the program to open at all.. So basically, at this point, I have many openoffice files but seemingly no program. All I wanted to do to start with was write a letter but I cannot even find where I would do this. Once I know what I am doing, I would be happy to participate in the various mailing lists, groups, etc. But I would be of absolutely no help to anybody at this point. So - - any help, anybody could offer to tell me where I am at would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you're running Windows.

To install OpenOffice, you download the appropriate file from www.openoffice.org. After the download is finished, double click on the file, to start the installation. The installation will take you through several panels, where you can generally accept the defaults. After that is completed, you should find an OpenOffice folder & icons in your Start menu. Use the icons to start the various OpenOffice components. Please reply, with further details, if what you're experiencing is different from this.

I'll bet the OP is opening the folder on the desktop which is created to unpack the setup files in - there was a long discussion about this recently....
