What sort of enclosures are they?

If they are in Microsoft Office 2007 format, with extensions like .docx, .xlsx etc. then OpenOffice can't open them anyway. The next version, due we hope in September, will be able to open such documents. To open these files in "read only" mode you will need special (free) software from Microsoft. To convert them to OpenOffice format (called ODF for Open Document Format) so you can both read and change them you will need additional (free) software like the ODF converter described at http://katana.oooninja.com/w/odf-converter-integrator. Or you could ask the people who sent the documents to send them again but in one of the older MS formats instead of the new 2007 format.

If they are in one of the older Microsoft Office formats then OpenOffice should be able to open them. When you installed OpenOffice did you ask for it to become the "default handler" for MS Office documents? If yes then something is wrong; please provide more details of exactly what happens when you try to open one of the enclosures. If no then you have two options: either (a) save the enclosure, right click on it, choose "Open with..." and select OpenOffice as the program to use or (b) change the "File Association" for the relevant document types (.doc for Word, .xls for Excel and .ppt for PowerPoint) using the standard Windows procedure. Look up File Association and then "change the program that opens a file" in the Help for details.

If this doesn't help then please explain in more detail exactly what you are trying to do and what happens when you try.
