Hello Margaret,

I'm afraid that if the xlr files are indeed MS Works that you have a
problem, because AFAIK OpenOffice.org doesn't read them. If you can find
somebody who saves them as xls (Excel) or doc (Word) files, then
OpenOffice.org (Mac, Windows or Linux version, whatever) can work with them.

One source says OOo 2.4 opens xlr files:
http://filext.com/file-extension/XLR

I quote from the users list about another MSWorks format, wps:

The enhanced version of OOo called Go-OOo claims that it can read MSWorks
files... see http://go-oo.org/discover/

... so all in all, I'd say instal OOo on your Mac (I wouldn't bother with
the OOo 2.4.1 version using X11, but go straight for the Aqua beta version
OOo 3.0 --
see http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/
and more precisely: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/aqua.html
and see whether it will read the xlr files on your CD

success!
