Hello Carol,

The X11 that comes with Leopard (OSX 10.5), also calles XQuartz, is
different from the X11 that works with Tiger (OSX 10.4). The XQuartz still
has some child diseases and it's good to keep up with the new versions that
come out, not only those that come with Leopard updates, but also from the
X11 developers themselves, at
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/Releases

One of the problems is that when OOo starts up X11, it produces a time out.
Therefore, a way around seems to be to startup X11 first (from Applications/
or Programs/ Utilities).

I'm using the Aqua version of OpenOffice.org, that is the version that works
without X11. It's more mac-like and functions quite well. Only... it's not a
completely finished version, but a beta release. The official approved
version will come out probably in September. Look out for it!

I use the beta-2 version of OOo 3.0.0. daily and don't have too many
problems with it. Sometimes it hangs, but it saves before quitting. Now,
I've been recommending people to try this Aqua beta version, but some
developers say you should be very careful, save often and don't do 'real
serious work' with it. So beware...

Nevertheless, the mac porting pages of OOo propose the beta version:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac
and you can find the beta-2 on good-day:
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/
open the 3.0.0beta2/
then choose Intel and your language (or without language extension for US-
english)
so probably:
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/3.0.0beta2/OOo_3.0.0beta2_MacOSXIntel_install.dmg

Maybe give it a try?
