Hello Catherine,

Can you specify which update from Apple caused this?
Did you update from Tiger to Leopard (OSX 10.4.x to OSX 10.5.x) ?
Was it an update to a newer version of Leopard (10.5.x tot 10.5.1/2/3 or 4)
?

The X11 utility that OpenOffice.org needs to present your work on the screen
is different in the Tiger version (X11 version 1.1.3 normally) and the
Leopard one. For Leopard, the x.org group developed a X11 new utility (also
called XQuartz), and when the first Leopard came out, it didn't really
function yet, at least not with OOo.
In the last 8 months ir so, several updates have been developed, from
version 2 to 2.3 already (see
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/Releases)

Because the Tiger X11 and the Leopard one are different, reinstalling
version 1.1.3 won't help when you have Leopard now.

If you moved to Leopard, you should update to the latest version of Leopard
(10.5.4), that includes X11 updates too - and if that doesn't solve the
problem you have these options:
• start X11 (from Programs/Utilities) before you start OOo
• update X11 to the latest version (from the xquartz releases site above)
• forget about the X11 altogether and install the (still experimental) Aqua
version of OpenOffice.org 3.0.0. It's the beta-2 version, with a link on the
opening page of www.openoffice.org.
A direct link is here:

open the beta-2 and choose either PPC or Intel Mac, and the language
(US-english is without the _en at the end - NOT the SDK!!). You might want
_it or _fr

I use this version... it sometimes hangs (but normally saves most of your
work before it quits), some things don't function yet, you should save your
work regularly and do not do 'serious' production work because you might
lose or damage your work.

success!
