I think that I had to use the standard Fedora build on Fedora 8, but I

As far as I can tell, there are no official OOo 64-bit builds available.
Am I wrong?
Kind of, yes.
The official 64bit Linux builds (RPM & DEB package formats) are part of
the 3.0 release cycle- as such the beta and development snapshot builds
for version 3 now include them.
Of course you are correct also in that there is no 'official' release
yet, not until 3.0 actually has the stable designation.
