In Windows, you can assign a drive letter permanently to a removable device. Right-click on My Computer, then choose "Manage" (or the like ... I'm working in XP, may be slightly different in Vista). Then select Storage > Disk Management, then right-click on the drive in question and select "Change drive letter and paths". I believe the rest is reasonably straightforward.
The benefit is that your path will always be preserved ... but choose a letter high enough that it's out of the way of other devices you may plug and unplug at times. I usually choose H: or higher for my removable devices. Try browse for the file without using "recent files". Can you see the file using the Windows explorer ?
