In fact, I _thought_ I read here that updates weren't sent out but
rather things of that sort would be a download of a new version of

missing out on updates?? Or is, for example, 2.4.2 going to be an
"update" to 2.4.1?

No, as far as I know OOo "upgrades" are always accomplished via a
complete new installation. But all the same arguments apply: if you
get the new file [and the MD5] from the attacker's web site then he
wins the game.

No arguement there!

I suspect I fell into a semantics "trap" due to cultural differences, or updates/upgrades got mixed up in context. An update to me is a patch, or fix, to something w/o upping the build/rev/version hmm, that's not right! Oh well. An update is inserted into the existing file, if you will, and becomes part of it. Whereas an "upgrade" is generally a new release of an application, as you indicate 2.4.2 would be to 2.4.1.
So I'm on your track at least.

Wellll, even for MS, I don't allow auto updates; only auto download.
I
do the installs using Custom Install because I want to see when
they're trying to push a Silverlight or whatever as an update,
things like that.

Very OT but, please, what's wrong with Silverlight? I *was* just
about to install "Turning The Pages" to look at the Ramayana exhibit
on the British Library web site

Go ahead and install it; I'm not for nor against it.
There is nothing inherently wrong with Silverlight AFAIK and I didn't mean to give that impression. My target was more the way MS occasionally "updates" but rather than it being an update, might be a whole new application and I wouldn't be surpised to eventually see Silverlight pushed as an update. People that use it seem to rave about it. I simply didn't care for it after I installed it, so I removed it, albeit with a few problems but nothing serious.
