Harold & Francesco,
Thank you. Just what I needed.

Hi all,
I am currently using OOo2.4 but have not found a way in Calc to do the
following:
Inserting text that includes reference to a value in another cell.
Example:
In Cell A1 with the value "CAR"
In Cell B1 with the formula "=$A$1"
In Cell C1 there is the text displayed is "The item requested is a CAR",
where the word car is a value from the cell B1.
Can anyone tell me how to enter this into cell C1? or is this feature only
in OOo3?
In C1 put the formula ="The item requested is " & B1
The "&" is the "concatenate" operator used for joining text strings. This
certainly works in my version 2.4 and I hope will continue to work in v3. It
also works if A1 has a numeric value.
