In which case I'd suggest your coding philosophy is wrong. There is
/zero/ reason to code for such rare events - code which is hardly
testable, and best omitted, leaving [un]subscription to be done
manually. Then it can't possibly go wrong.... a "listener" should be
exactly that, IMO.
All this makes me feel glad I use gmane newsgroup access ;-)

To Alan Lord: please would you explain how using gmane newsgroup access
helps in this context?
I use Thunderbird to read gmane news and it doesn't run filters on news
messages so I can't avoid the terrance stuff. Thunderbird also doesn't
let you delete news messages that you didn't send so the terrance stuff
hangs around for days till Thunderbird removes it from your folder due
to its age. What am I missing, please?
I also use Tbird to read gmane news. I have Tbird set to remove all
read items. When there is a block I don't want to read, I select it and
mark it as read. When I move to another box (Inbox, Drafts, etc.) all
messages marked "read" are gone.
