Paid based on characters?
That is very unusual.

Much more common is (total number of characters - (number of
characters/6) ) / 6, where the author is told that they are paid on
the basis of either "x" characters, or "z" characters, but it is
calculated on the basis of "y" words. "x" is the total number of
characters in the equation, and "y" is the result of that equation.
"z" is the result of the first part of the occasion. When "z" is
used, the author is told not to count spaces.

The precise method they are using can make a huge difference to how
much you get paid --- or even if you get paid.
