I am often using the same two or three templates to create new documents. I am tired of doing it through the menus. I tried recording a macro that allowed me to open an new document based on an existing template, but it doesn't record properly.

The help text lists opening of windows and actions carried out in another window than where the recorder was started among actions that are not recorded.

Does anyone know of a macro that does that? Or a is there a different approach that would allow me to press a button and have a new document created, based on an existing template?

I may be able to help with the "different approach". There is a New Document From Template command available in the Standard toolbar, but which is disabled by default. To enable this:
o Click the down-arrow at the extreme right of the Standard toolbar.
o Select Customize Toolbar... .
o In the Commands window under Toolbar Content, tick New Document From Template.
o Press OK.

Note that you will need to do this separately for the OpenOffice.org toolbar, the OpenOffice.org Writer toolbar, and so on, depending on whether you need the command when you have different types of document open - or none.

Now you can click this icon and, if you have it in the right place, just double-click your required template. Three clicks: is that close enough?

I trust this helps.
