I didn't see a response to this. Please tell us what platform you are on (Windows, Mac, Linux), and what version of OpenOffice. I've found that opening an Excel document that is opened by another person will come up as read-only or if the Linux permissions and ownership on the document do not give you write privilege you can get a doc in read only.
