Hello Bill, Under Mac, there's only one OOo icon AFAIK. OOo on Mac (with X11) used to open a Writer doc. With the Aqua 3.0 (soon to be released), you get anopening panel with a full choice of options. You could make a blank Writer, Calc, Draw etc. file and put that in the Dock for easier access.
