I wrote about this topic before, but now I succeeded to reproduce
the problem in a small odt file. In my previous posts the problem
was in a large doc file, and just when opening it with
OpenOffice. Now it will be easier to debug.
I can see *what* is happening here, but I don't know why it is happening.
Go to Format | Bullets and Numbering... | Options. You will see that
the character style for the numbering text is WW8Num40z0. Now go to
Format | Styles and Formatting and select Character
Styles. Right-click on WW8Num40z0 and select Modify... | Font. You
will see that the Symbol font is selected. Change this to something
more suitable, and you will see what you want in the document.
As I say, if this change happened without your wanting it to, I don't
know why. I suppose one possibility is that whatever font was
originally set in the style was not provided on a particular system
and was replaced (probably inappropriately) by Symbol according to a
(faulty?) substitution table.
I trust this helps.
