Yeah, suspected as much. 
Was already using fm, but was thinking of this along the lines of some of the 
more complex processing that we need to do
Never mind, more than one way to skin a cat...

the "re" operator accepts only string values as a second operand. See:
    http://www.voice-sistem.ro/docs/avpops/ar01s06.html#avp_check

the limitation is because performance reasons - having dynamic regexp is 
something very costly. You may consider as alternative the "fm" operator.
