First, your scenario is missing the actual import, you just have the data in the export domain, not the vms in the engine.
Second - A slightly simpler way you were looking for: 1. Export multiple vms using either a short script via RESTAPI or webadmin (select multiple vms and export). 2. Detach the export domain. 3. Backup the export domain with all its data. 4. Re-attach export domain when ready to. 5. Import vms.
