Regarding versions of PDF supported for reading, I'm having pretty good success using PDFBox to read existing files, with an eye towards converting them to read more easily on my Kindle.
However, it appears that the PDF reader on the Kindle is not very good. I have tried perfectly nice PDF files on it, and it crashes while reading some. My main project, where I'm creating my published book as PDF, using PDFBox: the resulting PDF reads fine with the Adobe Reader (ver 9 on Mac), but the Kindle gives up and I see nothing. I understand about not being able to support EVERY feature of the standard, it is massive....
