Ahh, good that you found an existing open Jira issue.

Are you saying your PDF example shows the same problem as the
chinese.pdf attached to PDFBOX-5?  It could still be useful to add it
as an attachment to the issue, eg saying "here is another PDF, also in
Chinese, showing the same problem".

Unfortunately I don't know of any workaround for embedded fonts that
don't map to known unicode characters.  I don't fully understand the
problem, but from what I do understand it sounds like the font simply
does not include enough information.

Do you control the production of the PDFs?
