Based on you seeing the test code working, I created a whole new gradle project, totally separated from my own and retried the code. It worked as expected. Something about my larger application seems to be breaking the render.
Can you think of anything that might pollute the classpath and *prevent *text rendering? I understand that's a pretty open ended question, but I'd appreciate any ideas you might have.
