I'm very familiar with this sort of document physics/chemistry with spectra (pp 230/231) . These are vector graphics generated directly from the spectrometer data and can contain tens of thousands of points often as bezier circles (as in this case). I've written software to extract this as experimental data and it's easy to get into quadratic scaling.
