Hum. I'd be very surprised if there was any wire-level incompatibility between them. More likely there's a conflict over libqpidcommon.so which is used by both broker and client. We're not yet to the point of having a clear binary compatibility story so there's no guarantee of link-level compatibility at all except from a single build.

If you have the time/interest and 2 machines you could confirm this - see if the from-source client on one machine works with the yum installed broker on another. I'm betting they will.
