apologies for the delay in responding to this.

The link problems seen are, indeed, resolved with an updated gcc.
It may not always be possible for us to use the up to date gcc, but that is,
in my opinion, our problem. From the fixes you gave I see how to do local
fixes.
Please don't commit the changes on my account, unless you feel that removing
the outlining functions is good for the code base in general.
