Ok, that means it probably is a bug in the sasl security layer codec in qpid-cpp.
I attach the pcap file for a single transmission anyway, also the trace output of both programs; one set using sasl_max_ssf=0 only, the other using sasl_mechanism=PLAIN in addition to that. Sorry about wasting your time :/
You have identified a bug which is great and not a waste of time at all! Thanks for reporting and helping in the diagnosis. Did you need the security layer, or is max_ssf=0 a suitable workaround for you at present?
I've raised https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/QPID-6348 and will try and get some time to reproduce and track it down soon.
