There *is* actually a simple fix for this in servicemix-3.2 branch so I am wondering if you are building from SVN or using the 3.2.2 snapshots. It is perfectly plausible that this simple fix doesn't cover all cases where the component is resolved and called before start is complete, so lets make sure you have the fix in your build and then go from there.
