I tested here with my pop3 email account and it worked like a charm.
Maybe your mail server doesn't act
fully compliant to pop3 protocol?
Btw. I did some changes to the servicemix-mail component...see:
https://issues.apache.org/activemq/browse/SM-1690
Best hint I can give you atm is to try with another email server
software if possible.
