There are a few good books on Maven, might be worth a read.
One of the reasons these projects use Maven is because it simply works.

No, not all things have been 100% backwards compatible, running several 
versions of Maven isn't difficult.

And if you download releases "every time" - you have something wrong
in your general setup....
