However a mere "mvn clean install" in top directory of a head checkout
is actually what I have been doing and exactly the one that fails. So I
presume you meant something else?

The current svn trunk builds with Java 7. It's just the integration
tests which are a bit unstable, so you might want to use just
mvn install
without activating the IT profiles.
