Sling without discovery?

Is it possible to run Sling without discovery enabled? I made a build with the 
API bundle left in place but the other two discovery bundles removed. Sling 
started normally but it seemed that no jobs were executing. Can this be done or 
is discovery an integral part of the server? Thanks!
