You only can search in them and get several matching address cards. On our system these are 25 addresses at most. This is intentional! In our example we have ca. 14000 users in this address book. To synch them all would be way too slow. Your client tries to download the complete address book content. So this will never work. That's the same problem as in other address book clients/apps/programs. Perhaps your client is able to only search in it? Perhaps can at least use autocompletion over searches? If yes, you have to configure it accordingly. As I don't know "em Client" at all, I can't help you there, sorry.
