(1) the "old" server uses LMTP successfully
(2) one of the links says, "LDA is a short-running process" and "LMTP is
a long-running process"
(3) other links tell me LMTP is the "newer" and "more secure" protocol
(4) re: transport -- I've tried
virtual_transport = lmtp:unix:private/dovecot-lmtp
virtual_transport = lmtp:unix:localhost
virtual_transport = lmtp:inet:localhost
mail_transport = lmtp:inet:localhost
I've not included the port (Should it be 587 or 24?)
(5) I've not disabled LDA
(6) Dovecot is using Port(s) -- 143, 993, 4190 -- Postfix is using Port
-- 25
(7) I have monitored "/var/log/mail.log" and found only "samba" errors
in "apport.log.1"
"samba" is running as well as "smbd" & "samba-ad-dc" -- I doubt they are
causing my SMTP issue
I will try disabling LDA and modify the mail transport for Postfix (or
configuring LDA more fully)

What about getting rid of LDA and configuring LMTP directly in my
"local.conf"?
Why do you prefer the lmtp instead of lda? Is it
better/safer/quicker/anything?
Did you set the postfix for LMTP (local_transport =
lmtp:hostname:port) and disable the lda?
Did you check the port listening (fuser/netstat)?
Did you see the logfiles (mainly apparmor entries)?
