Yes, I noticed that behaviour too.
You can bypass this limitation configuring EAS account first in Gmail app and than the Google Account

Thanks, yes, indeed.

I had in memory that Gmail had abandoned ActiveSync. So that is not really the case.

They only stopped support for ActiveSync on their Gmail servers years ago.

I just use the Gmail App that is pre-installed. It can use ActiveSync if you use “Exchange” as the server type.

does anyone have a recommendation for an Android Mail/Calendar app that works via ActiveSync

against a SOGo server? I would like to avoid the effort of having to configure IMAP/SMTP/CalDAV/CardDAV

all separately. ActiveSync is so convenient in comparison …

I already used Nine and BlueMail so far. Nine is not free but cheap (IMO) but a pain to move to a new

device with the license key. BlueMail is OK but I recently encountered  a problem with calendar with

it and there is no support reachable there (I would even pay, but …).
