I haven't done a major version upgrade of a multi-node cluster before.
I would expect a rolling upgrade to work correctly, and that is the
procedure in the documentation:

One thing to note... if your Solr 8 indexes have EVER been touched by a
Solr version before 8.0, they will not be usable in Solr 9. So if you
upgraded from Solr 7 to Solr 8, you will have to reindex from scratch.
