I had the same experience. Have you tried feeding one of thos gif files into a commercial program (like Ominpage) to estabilsh a baseline? The other thing that makes most of the spams trickly is they break the final display up into panels of individul gif's, and those panels often break in the middle of words and sentences. It seems that to truly reconsctruct the full message, one whould have to paste the gif's together appropriately, or simply let a web brower do that, asking it to "paint" the final page representation onto a graphic pallette of some sort (ala "print to gif"), and then OCR the result.
