Crank up the logging verbosity level to get FuzzyOCR to tell you more
about what is going on. (" focr_verbose 2 " in FuzzyOcr.cf file).
Make sure that you've got the necessary PBM helper apps installed.
If you do a "ls -l /usr/bin/giftopnm" do you see the expected program?
One thing that can trigger those 'Unexpected error' messages, a corrupted
image file in the spam.

The default FuzzyOCR setup is to not scan graphics if the email already
scores 10. Read the FuzzyOcr.cf config file, look at the
"focr_autodisable_score" parameter.
