His speech was titled "An Overview of
the Earth's Climate System" Lisa Getoor, C.S., was invited to give a talk to the New York Academy of Science Machine Learning Symposium on October 27.James Hendler, C.S. and UMIACS, has been named the Associate Director of the Web Science Research Initiative, a major international effort run out of MIT and Southampton University. Jim is the first Professor from outside the two home institutions to be asked to join the board of this initiative, and is
the only outside director. Xiangdong Ji, Physics, visited Bejing, China from November 8-26 where he attended the Inaugural Ceremony of the High-Energy Physics Center.Jonathan Katz, C.S. and UMIACS, gave a week-long course on "Zero Knowledge:
Foundations and Applications" in Bertinoro, Italy.Wendy Wang, ESSIC, spoke about her research on phytoplankton and its affect on ocean life and the earth's climate to the personnel of the NPR science
program, Earth & Sky (earthsky.org) on November 17th.On Nobember 3 the CS Department, UMIACS and Fraunhofer hosted the inaugural
Maryland Software Day. The day was intended as a forum for UMD andFraunhofer software researchers to discuss their research with interested
parties from on- and off-campus. 75 people attended the event, whichfeatured 21 presentations by CS/UMIACS faculty and students and Fraunhofer employees on current research efforts in the area of software engineering
and programming languages. Over 25 people from off-campus were present, including representatives from the Office of the Secretary of Defense; Lockheed-Martin; General Motors; CSC; SAIC; NASA; and the Johns-Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, among others. The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) celebrating 75 yearssince its founding created a pamphlet of interviews with 75 notable teachers in the country. Five of these 75 were from our department: Richard E. Berg, Sylvester James Gates, Jr., John Layman, William Phillips, and Edward (Joe)
F. Redish. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ IN THE NEWS:Michael A'Hearn, Astronomy, and Deep Impact were mentioned in the Washington Post on October 31 in a story about a new mission for the Deep Impact Probe
which will send the vehicle on an extended mission to intercept CometBoethin. This mission will not involve a crash but will examine the comet in a flyby. The story was also published in the New Scientist on October 31,
MSNBC on November 2 and A'Hearn spoke about the new missions on the Discovery Channel on November 13. Richard Berg, Physics, was mentioned in a Washington Post article that inquires how the world would be different if homespun proverbs wereliterally true on November 12. Berg's expertise in physics is the measuring
benchmark for a good humorist. Steve Halperin, Mathematics and Dean of CMPS, was quoted in the MarylandDaily Record on November 27 in an article about the Informatics Coalition, a group of about 50 academic, private and federal agency representatives that
meet to discuss and review the region's informatics strengths and weaknesses. Bruce Kane, Physics, had his breakthrough research referred to in a NewScientist report on November 27. An individual 'dopant' atom has been spied interfering with the flow of electrons through a silicon transistor for the
first time. Stephen Kortenkamp, Astronomy, was quoted on Space.com on November 21talking about the Great Pluto War at the recent International Astronomical
Union (IAU)'s General Assembly in Prague.Rachel Osten, Astronomy, was quoted on the BBC News on November 7 discussing
her team's study of large solar flares and radiation of our own sun andothers stars. The story of her research was also printed in the Washington
Post on November 13.Robert Park, Physics, was quoted in the Laredo Morning Times on November 6
in an article about the decreasing supply of helium, the second mostabundant element in the universe. Park says "nothing is really being done to
save helium from being lost forever"Robert Park, Physics, weighed in on the subject of Transcendental Meditation and the new palaces being built in Philadelphia PA and Cherry Hill, NJ in a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer on November 12. TM claims that it will
alter the physical reality of the planet through the power of collectivethought; it can boost your intelligence, improve your memory and even reduce
the world's crime and unemployment. Park says "I suppose if people aresitting around meditating, there's a lot less crime. It's totally unrelated
to the fact that they're meditating." Robert Park, Physics, was quoted in the Guardian (UK) commenting on thewaste of money that is and poor judgment that runs the International Space
Station. Derek Richardson, Astronomy, was listed as a consultant in the Decemberissue of National Geographic for the "Special Supplement: The Solar System"
insert. Chris Reynolds, Astronomy, is quoted in Science Now on November 22, commenting on a new discovery by the Harvard Smithsonian Center forAstrophysics. Black hole GRS1915 seems to be rotating at least 950 times per second, hundreds of thousands of times faster than Katrina. The measurement marks the first time astronomers have been able to quantify the spin of a
black hole so directly. Ben Shneiderman, C.S. and UMIACS, was quoted in the New York Times onNovember 2 speaking about the promising effect of creating a new field of
study devoted to "Web Science." Ben Shneiderman, C.S and UMIACS, was quoted in USA Today on November 6saying that many vendors in the technology industry need to do a better job
making their products easier to use for consumers. V.S. Subrahmanian, C.S. and UMIACS, appeared on Italy's RAI-3 TV (one ofItaly's 3 major networks) in an interview about the OASYS Opinion Analysis
System on November 6.Maria Tzortziou, ESSIC, was quoted in the Baltimore Sun on October 6th in an article, "Environmental Center's Lessons Focus on Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem."
