Single IPs are acceptable. Anything that passes a lint check should be acceptable.
When you added only a single IP, were all other relays after/above that IP's relay also included in your trusted_networks? If they weren't they need to be. If they were, it'd be the first time I've seen that happen and would be very interested in a copy of your config and the message headers.
