Subject: Mail Appliances?
Appreciate this may not be 100% the best place to ask, but I'm
struggling to think of anywhere better other than Usenet.
I'm currently running a box that I've configured to run Postfix plus
Spamassassin, it works, but it's the usual "Only I know about
it and if
it fails or I get hit by a bus" etc.
I get that line from my boss all the time. I simply reply "If I'm hit by a
bus, your screwed. So pay me enough where I don't have to walk." :)
Late January we were about to roll out a new service here, and there was
a project meeting. My boss said "We're fine as long as Joe doesn't get
hit by a bus" (Joe being one of my peers, and the key sysadmin for the
project, whereas on this particular project I'm merely a technical guru
for two of the peripheral services (kerberos and email)).
On his way home that night, Joe's car (a tiny Zenn electric car) got
t-boned by a Toyota Highlander running a stop-sign.
Joe's fine. His gf, who was in the passenger seat (and the side that
got hit) was a little less fine, but it all appears to be minor and
temporary stuff (though I haven't heard how she's doing in the last week
or two). Car is not fine, but literally absorbed it all. And the heavy
batteries in the bottom of the car caused the little thing to spin
around instead of any kind of tipping action.
However, the moral of the story is:
a) "Not walking" isn't good enough. You can still get hit by a
truck/bus even if you're in a car.
b) Don't joke about your sysadmins, or other critical resources, being
hit by busses or trucks. It happens. Plan accordingly.
