That version is subject to this bug in the setuid code: http://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=5574 This bugfix is pending for the not-yet-released 3.1.10 tree, and is already present in the fully-released 3.2.3 version of spamassassin. I'm not 100% sure if that's the cause, but it seems quite likely. (note: there's a LOT of unrelated stuff on that bugreport)
