Do you mean like a transparent SMTP proxy?
That's ugly business, but if you really want to go that route, there's
no reason why SA can't be plugged into one. You just need to find a
transparent SMTP proxy that supports piped mail filters.
Some tools that support this from a quick google search:

However, you might want to save yourself the headaches and set up a
relaying MTA. This is, generally speaking, a lot easier. Is there a
particular reason you want/need to avoid this?
