Have you tried running a database trace utility to verify (1) that it is indeed connecting to the database at scan time, and (2) exactly what queries it is running, to see how it is connecting and what data it is retrieving? Granted you probably aren't familiar with the internals of bayes DB structure, but something like "it's not connecting as the right user" or "it's not querying the bayes tables" should be pretty apparent.
