Example.com is reserved (along with example.org .net, and most non- country tlds). However, since often, especially when talking about mailing systems, you need to talk about several different domains, I use something.tld or server1.tld (where tld stands for top-level- domain) since there is no 'tld' top-level domain, it is safe. Yes, I could use 'example.com and then example.org and then example.net, but I've found that that really does tend to confuse people.
