If you haven't got the sysstats package installed, I suggest you install it and see what it tells you before making changes. For instance, its always possible that you're distorting system performance by running too many SA child processes: this can impact performance by causing excess swapping.
I don't use MySQL, so don't know what performance monitoring facilities it offers. Martin
