your delay occurs right before the "no ipv6" - so I think it is the
issue. Have you actually disabled ipv6 on the system? I know merely
having an ipv6-capable Linux system makes libc go down the AAAA track. I
don't know what OS you are using, but disable ipv6 and reboot and see if
that fixes it.

freebsd 7.3, compiled without ipv6.
host -6 -t txt S1024._DOMAINKEY.YAHOO.COM 192.168.140.29
host: can't find IPv6 networking

this fixed it:
deinstalled p5-IO-Socket-INET6 and everything is fine.
