After a couple of years without being greatly troubled by spam (a few a week), about a fortnight ago I started seeing 10-20 a day. They have a similar look and tone but I can't see any obvious ways to get them with rules.

My trouble is that while all has been well, I've forgotten how SA works!

I want to start by checking that my installation of SA is working as well as possible. I started by getting my host to upgrade it to 3.3.2. Next, I want to check that sa-update is working and that my rules are up-to-date. I can see that I have the entries on the root crontab:

40 * * * * sa-update --gpgkey 6C6191E3 --channel
sought.rules.yerp.org
43 2 * * * sa-update --gpgkey 856AA88A --channel
90_2tld.cf.sare.sa-update.dostech.net --channel updates.spamassassin.org

How can I check what rules and / or rulesets are actually being used by SA?

Are there any other generic rules that it's recommended that I should subscribe to?

Also, I'm a bit confused about config files. I seem to have two, one at /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf and one at /usr/share/spamassassin/local.cf . What's the difference between the two and which one takes precedence?

Thanks in anticipation!
