But it still should have used the bayes_path option from local.cf regardless of the user. Unless it was running as a user that couldn't read the bayes_path directory...not sure what would happen in that case.
Out of curiosity, what options are being fed to spamd? The simplest way to get them is probably to grab the line from the "ps -ef" list.
