I just truncate the message hard and it generally works better than not

how do you truncate messages for the scan?

as far as i understand the process milter hands over the mail to spamc and get back the modified message (report headers and so on) which is then passed to the users inbox which forbids truncate the message at that stage

according to this spamd would need to stop processing after X bytes but get the full message and bounce it back to the milter untruncated
